# Line items, units, taxes and discounts

Each line on an invoice or estimate has a price, a quantity, and optional unit, discount and taxes.

### Add a line

1. In the editor, click **Add product or service**.
2. **Web:** type in the name box and pick a saved product or service, or choose **Create product** / **Create service**. **App:** search your catalog and tap a result, or tap **Add a new item**.
3. Set the price and quantity. Add a **Unit** if you like (up to 12 characters, for example "h" or "kg").
4. Drag lines to reorder them.

The unit column only prints when at least one line has a unit. It's a label and doesn't change the maths.

In the app, every new line is saved to your catalog automatically. On the website, an item you create from the invoice with **Create product** or **Create service** is saved to your catalog as soon as you click **Save** in that box. Editing a line on an invoice doesn't change the catalog.

### Add tax

1. On a line, click **Apply tax**.
2. Pick one or more tax presets, or click **Create tax preset** and enter a name and rate.

Taxes are always added on top of the price. Each tax shows as its own row under **Subtotal**. Tax-inclusive prices and compound taxes aren't available.

### Add a discount

- **On one line:** **Apply discount**, then **Percentage (%)** or **Flat ($)**.
- **On the whole invoice:** web **Discount entire invoice**; app **Add a discount** under Summary.

The invoice discount doesn't reduce the tax.

### How the total is worked out

- Line total = price × quantity − line discount.
- Tax = line total × tax rate, added up per tax name.
- Total = subtotal − invoice discount + taxes.

Prices round to **Item decimal points** in **Settings** → **Invoice**.

### FAQ

**My tax total is a cent different from my calculator.** Tax is worked out on each line after its discount and rounded to 2 decimals. The lines are then added up, so the total can differ by a cent from tax worked out on the subtotal.

**"Flat ($)" shows a dollar sign, but I bill in euros.** The label always shows $. The amount uses your invoice's currency.

**I get "subtotal must be greater than 0".** Add at least one line with a price above zero.
