Automatic card payments for recurring invoices
Your customer can choose to have each new invoice from a recurring invoice charged to their card automatically. They switch it on themselves when they pay by card. You can't switch it on for them.
What you need first
- Connect Stripe: Settings → Payments → Card payments (Stripe).
- On the recurring invoice, tick your Stripe account under Accepted payments, then save.
How your customer turns it on
- They open an invoice from the recurring invoice and choose Credit card.
- They see "This invoice recurs on a … basis. You can automate future payments…".
- They tick Use this card to pay future invoices automatically. and pay.
Customers do this on the online invoice page in their browser.
What happens each time
When the next invoice is created and emailed, InvoiceQuick charges your customer's saved card for the amount due.
- Paid: the invoice is marked paid and your customer gets a receipt ("…we received your payment.").
- Not paid: you get a notification, "Payment failed for Invoice #N.", with the reason. The invoice stays unpaid, and your customer can still pay it from the invoice link.
Good to know
- A charge is only tried when Stripe is still connected and the new invoice offers card payment.
- The card charged is the one your customer last paid with or added.
- Once your customer ticks the box, auto-pay stays on for that recurring invoice.
- Your customer manages saved cards from their customer dashboard, where they can add a card or use Delete card. They can save up to 10 cards. To change cards, they should add the new card first, then delete the old one.
FAQ
Where can I see which customers use auto-pay? There's no list for this at the moment. A successful charge shows on the invoice as a Stripe payment.
My customer wants to stop auto-pay. Edit the recurring invoice, untick card payment under Accepted payments, and save. New invoices then aren't charged. To offer card payment again without auto-pay, delete the recurring invoice and create a new one.
My customer got the same invoice more than once. Contact us with the invoice numbers before your customer pays. You can void the extra copies.
This month's charge didn't run. Check that Stripe is still connected and that card payment is ticked on the recurring invoice. Then look at the invoice's activity for "Payment failed." and the reason.
