Invoice numbering
Each new invoice gets the next number automatically: your highest invoice number plus one. You can change any number before you save.
Set your first invoice number
- Web: Sidebar → Settings → Invoice. App: Menu → All modules → Setup → Invoice branding.
- Enter a number in Start invoice number.
- Click Save (app: Save settings).
Your first invoice uses this number. The default is 1. Once you have invoices, this setting isn't used. New invoices continue from your highest number.
Change one invoice's number
- Open the invoice and click Edit (or create a new one).
- Type the number you want in the number field.
- Save the invoice.
Your next new invoice will continue from your highest number. To jump ahead, for example to 1000, type 1000 on your next invoice.
Rules for numbers
- Whole numbers only, from 0 to 999,999,999,999.
- No letters, prefixes or suffixes (for example, "INV-" or "/2026").
- Each number can be used only once in your company. You'll see "The number has already been taken." if it's in use.
- Void, paid and draft invoices keep their numbers.
- If you delete your newest invoice, the next new invoice gets its number again.
- Estimates have their own numbers.
FAQ
I reset my numbers to 1 every year. Now it says the number already exists. Numbers must be unique across all your invoices, including past years. To keep the year in your numbering, put it at the start. For example, type 20260001 on your first invoice of 2026. The next ones become 20260002, 20260003 and so on. Next January, type 20270001.
I changed Start invoice number, but nothing happened. That setting only applies to your very first invoice. Type the number you want on your next invoice instead.
Can I add "INV-" in front of my numbers? Not at the moment. Numbers can only contain digits.
I typed a big number by mistake and now every new invoice continues from it. Change that invoice back to the number you meant, then save. New invoices continue from your highest number.
